Rhossili Bay on the Gower peninsula just a 25 minute drive from The Gower Apartments has been voted Britain’s best beach and is third in a list of best European beaches in a survey of worldwide tourists by the TripAdvisor website. It is possible to do the whole walk along the coast!
A distance of 14.6 miles separates Redcliffe from Rhossili and a journey of just 25 minutes by car. Turning left out of Redcliffe driveway continue for just under a mile until you come to a T- Junction. Turn left here and continue through the village of Bishopston passing their two pubs called ” The Joiner’s ” and the ” The Valley Inn ” along the way until you come to a second T – Junction (1.8 miles from Redcliffe) Left again, travelling for about a mile passing through the village of Kittle. Turn right at the sign for Rhossili. Another mile and a half along look out for a sign to Parkmill. You will pass the Gower Heritage Centre (a must if you have young children). Continue along this road following all signs to Rhossili. At Rhossili, park either in the church car park (an honesty box at the entrance) or further along the road to the main car park situated opposite the Worm’s Head Hotel. Must mention that the views across the bay from the bar/restaurant are just spectacular!
A chance to admire the bay over a glass of wine or a cup of coffee?
Having left the car in the car park opposite the Worms Head Hotel we proceeded on foot in the direction of Worms Head. The wide path is even and suitable for wheel chairs and push chairs users. The views on route of Rhosilli Bay are awesome! I see a group of wind surfers weaving their way freely in the skies above. The national trust shop on route looks inviting with an exhibition of paintings upstairs. Worth climbing the stairs alone for the most stunning views of the bay from its windows.
The route so far is fairly flat but quite a decline as we head towards the cause way to Worm’s Head. The notice on the coastguard’s window tells us had we arrived by 9.10am that morning we would have had 5 good hours to complete the walk to the far end of Worms Head and return safely to the mainland.
Seals can be seen at low tide on the causeway and can get stranded in the rocks pools having to wait for the tide to give them back their freedom. Pups generally are born in September and October and do not enter the water until they are about 2 to 3 weeks old.
Worms Head is an important breeding and nestling site for many birds such as Guillemots, Razorbills, Kittiwakes, Fulmars and Peregrines. Because of this visitors are asked not to venture onto the the outer head between March 1st – September 15th.
